Chester B. Melot

Former Mattituck resident Chester B. Melot of Brodheadsville, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 12, peacefully at home. He was 90 years old.

Mr. Melot was born in Brooklyn on Sept. 10, 1920, the son of Clarice Bennett and Chester Z. Melot. He married Janet Louise Mothersele of Nutley, N.J., in 1942.

He attended Syracuse University before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1942. He served on the USS Ancon, an Amphibious Force Command ship, and took part in the European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign of World War II, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy. After the war’s end, he returned home to New York.

He moved to Mattituck in 1949 to farm the land that is now Mattituck Estates. For many years, he served as treasurer of Mattituck Free Library and the Mattituck Park District. He retired in 1978 as a deputy county clerk of Suffolk County, overseeing the Department of Motor Vehicles. He and his wife relocated to Wilmington, N.C. After her passing, he moved to Zephyrhills, Fla., where he resided for 10 years before moving to Pennsylvania.

Surviving are six children, Charles Melot of Florida, Helen Melot Warner of Maine, John Melot of South Carolina, Thomas Melot of Florida, Mary Melot Mattoon of Oklahoma and the Rev. E. Ann Melot of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Megan Barba of Oklahoma and Colin Barnett of Texas; and two step-grandchildren, J.J. Thomas and M. Weatherly Thomas of South Carolina.

Memorial services were held Dec. 15 at Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville, Pa. Cremation took place at the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg. Burial was in Cutchogue Cemetery.
