This is it, folks — my last column of 2010. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I can’t wait to say goodbye to 2010. The year has not been kind and I’m more than ready to say good riddance. Bring on 2011!

The Drama Club at Greenport High School could use your help. They need a dozen or so white button-down shirts in various sizes for their upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz.” If you can help out, please drop off your donation at the school.

The GHS Audio Visual Club is seeking donations of professional audio and/or video equipment to help upgrade the system in the school’s auditorium. For more information or to arrange a donation, contact Joe Capuano at 477-1950, ext. 223, or [email protected]

Zachary Daniel, grandson of former Greenporters George and Florence Glew, was recently selected for Navy Officer Candidate School, and will report to Newport, R.I., on March 13, 2011. Zachary graduated in May from North Carolina State University with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering. After completing OCS he will attend flight training school in Pensacola, Fla.

I love to report good things happening to good people — and Callie Bubb is one of the best. Callie, a senior at GHS, recently received the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award for GHS, recognizing her achievements in scholarship, athletics and citizenship and placing her among the top students in the nation. Congratulations!

But there’s more. Callie and classmate Marvin Rodriguez are both Suffolk Zone Award winners, acknowledging their outstanding achievement as physical education students, scholars and citizens.

As if that weren’t enough, Callie and fellow GHS cheerleaders Holly Sponza and Payge Corazzini earned the title of Elite All Americans and will perform at halftime during the Fed Ex Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Another exceptional GHS senior, Dantré Langhorne, literally brought the game against Bridgehampton to a halt last Wednesday. Just a few minutes into the game, Dantré tipped the ball into the basket and became a member of the elite 1,000-plus point club.
