CAST needs your help

Your mailbox has likely been stuffed with lots of catalogs and, even in this digital age, some old-fashioned Christmas cards. But if you live in Southold, it’s entirely possible that one piece of mail you usually receive at this time of year hasn’t arrived.
It’s the annual appeal letter from Community Action Southold Town that was mailed in late November, but apparently not received by many of those who have so generously contributed funds to the organization that helps to care for the neediest residents among us.

This is the organization’s major appeal each year and with an increasing number of people looking to CAST for food, clothing, Christmas gifts and such basics as help in paying for rent and heating oil, it’s critical for the organization to reach out to the community.

Something went awry between the time the letters were mailed and now, CAST board president Peggy Murphy said. She doesn’t know what happened, but she knows the critical appeal letters aren’t reaching most of the intended targets.
CAST executive director Linda Ortiz is following up with the U.S. Postal Service to try to determine what happened. So far, she has no answers, but knows some people outside of Southold received their appeals, but no one in town appears to have gotten them.

Because a lot of people want to make tax deductible contributions before the end of the year, it’s important to get word out now, Ms. Ortiz said.

If you can find it in your heart and your pocketbook to help, Ms. Ortiz and CAST volunteers hope you will send your contributions to CAST, P.O. Box 159, Greenport, N.Y. 11944.
