Cutchogue-New Suffolk: Library to host program for tots Monday
After 372 years, a total lunar eclipse coincided with the winter solstice on Dec. 21, “creating a five-hour cosmic happening throughout the longest night of the year,” according to weather.com. If you chose to step out and gaze into sky at 3:17 a.m. Tuesday, you might have experienced the moon in the deepest shadow of the earth, displaying the most spectacular shades of coppery red. Geoff Chester of the U.S. Naval Observatory checked back 2,000 years and found only one previous time when an eclipse coincided with the winter solstice: Dec. 21, 1638. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait even 100 years for the next overlap, which will occur Dec. 21, 2094.
Better late than never… The members of the Cutchogue United Methodist Church offer heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, including NJROTC cadets and many others from local communities, who worked so hard to ensure the success of its annual Election Day scallop dinner.
Marnie and Tim Kelly were happy and proud when they heard the good news! Congratulations to their son Ryan on his promotion to associate vice president at Merrill Lynch.
Rick and Debbie Horton couldn’t be happier! Madeline Avery Bowen, grandchild No. 10, arrived Dec. 8, weighing 7 pounds, 3 ounces — just in time to end 2010. Debbie and Rick share this blessing with Avery’s mom and dad, Susan and Sean Bowen, as well as her Laurel grandparents Debbie and Brendan Bowen. What an amazing Christmas this will be! May G-d’s light shine on all!
Fifteen members of the Town of Southold Youth Bureau gathered at the Human Resource Center one recent evening to bake cookies and create cards for the residents of San Simeon and generally celebrate Christmas and the holiday season.
Prayers of healing are being sent to Helene Ciappetta as she recovers from a broken leg.
Carol Brown was blessed to be in Virginia for the arrival of her first grandchild, Caleb Jackson Hart, named for his two maternal grandfathers. He is very much loved and both mother and son are doing well after a two and a half-hour labor. Congratulations and Mazel tov!

As the welcoming lights of the alluring street lamps give our hamlet a glow, the Village Green draws us into the Holy Night scene and the love and warmth that it bestows.
