Greenport: Christmas parade rescheduled for Sunday

The Cub Scouts of Pack 51 held a food drive outside of the Greenport IGA on November 20.

Oh my goodness! Christmas is a mere 12 days away! I hope you’re keeping up with the hustle and bustle and that all your tasks are completed right on schedule.

Santa had a crisis at the North Pole and had to reschedule his appearance in Greenport. The annual Christmas Parade is now set to take place Sunday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. Everyone is asked to assemble at the west side parking lot.

The Cub Scouts of Pack 51 have been busy elves! On Nov. 20 they collected 48 bags of groceries and a turkey for CAST during a food drive outside the Greenport IGA. Thank you to the IGA and to everyone who donated. At the pack’s Dec. 1 meeting, toys were collected for CAST and Officer Rory Forrestal of the Southold Town Police Department gave a special presentation. In addition to selling and delivering wreaths to the local merchants, the scouts also decorated a village Christmas tree and will take part in the festivities this Sunday. They’d like to thank the Village of Greenport for supporting them.

Pastor Tom LaMothe and musical director Lisa Shaw of Greenport Baptist Church will participate in a living nativity entitled “This Night in Bethlehem” at St. Gabriel’s Center for Youth on Shelter Island. Performances are Friday, Dec. 17, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 18, at 5 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. Seating is limited for all performances, so reservations are encouraged. Admission is $25 for adults, $10 for students. Contact Maureen Johnston at 749-0001 or Theresa Andrew at 258-4707.

In the ‘Battle of the Forks,’ the North Fork, and Greenport in particular, are way out on top! The GHS varsity boys basketball team handily defeated East Hampton on Wednesday, 70-41, then turned around and defeated Southampton on Friday, 70-35. To say that I’m thoroughly impressed with our boys is an understatement. Congratulations to Coach Al Edwards and his team for such outstanding performances. Keep up the good work, guys!

Mike Petroski was the guest of honor at a party last Saturday celebrating his 16th birthday. Jim and I (and approximately 60 others) were on hand to make his day a special one. Happy birthday, Mike. I hope you’re enjoying your new computer.
MaryAnn Dinizio was the guest of honor at a surprise party in her honor at The Portly Grape last Sunday. Friends and family members gathered to help celebrate her 75th birthday in style. Happy birthday, Aunt MaryAnn!

It was nice to see Terry Mellas Lupton at the party. She’s spent the last two weeks in Greenport visiting with her parents, Dottie and Paul!

Healing wishes to Barbara and Steve Damiani, who were involved in an accident on the causeway on Thanksgiving weekend. At this writing Barbara is still a patient at Glen Cove Hospital after surgery for a shattered knee and Steve is resting at home trying to get those broken ribs to mend. I love you both and wish you a speedy recovery.

Sympathy is extended to the Doucett family on the passing of family matriarch, Martha Doucett, who would have celebrated her 97th birthday Dec, 16.

Birthday wishes this week to Cassandra Kalin and Jeanine Bishop on the 16th; Beverly Sage, my cousin Liam Heaney and Maddie Hansen on the 17th; Francine Biggs and Adam Van Etten on the 18th; my aunt Marion Heaney, who will be turn 93 in Rusk, Texas and her son, Brion, on the 19th; and Mike Mazzaferro and Bryan Weingart on the 22nd.

A very happy anniversary to Susan and Tim Reeves, who will celebrate on Dec. 16.

Next week’s column will be the last of the year, so if something’s going on between then and Jan. 13 that you’d like to see reported here, now would be the time to call or e-mail me.
