No one was injured when a dump truck carrying a load of construction debris overturned on Factory Ave. in Mattituck late Monday afternoon and the driver of an SUV swerved off the road to avoid the wreck, Southold Town Police reported.

The truck driver, William Rash, 29, of Westhampton Beach,  was heading south on Factory Ave. in a 2001 Mack truck when he swerved to avoid a low-hanging wire and lost control of the vehicle, which overturned and landed on the driver’s side in the northbound lane, according to police.

Beverly Buckingham, 44, of Mattituck, who was behind the wheel of a 2008 Mercury SUV heading north on Factory Ave., swerved to avoid the overturned truck and ran off the road into a pile of asphalt.

Both drivers declined medical treatment.

The truck is registered to East End Ecology, the parent company of Mattituck Sanitation. The Suffolk County Police Department’s motor carrier safety inspection unit, which came out to inspect the wreck, issued the company two equipment violations, according to police.

Factory Ave. was closed for several hours as town police and the Mattituck Fire Department worked to clear the roadway.

  • Another dirt bag 22 wheeler. No surprise. These idiots do 80mph on 495 tailgating cars doing 75.

  • To Red Flannel Man: You have a big mouth and are not too respectful of people you know nothing about. Your comment “these idiots do 80mph on495 tailgating cars doing 75” is insensitive and antagonistic. I think anyone with a Red Flannel shirt on is a redneck, uneducated loser!

  • sounds like you know nothing
    just have lots of comments

  • how did this happen was he flying?????????

  • Red Flannel Man, You are a very ignorant person. Most accidents involving trucks are caused by other vehicles. People like you are ignorant. It takes a lot to stop a truck, even going at a slow speed, which this driver had to be doing. And no I am not a truck driver. ” Trucker” was right about you.

  • It actually happens. As the person in front, you are forced to drive at speeds you cannot control or move out of the lane in fear for your life, risking your life in the process. There are indeed bullies on our roadways. I think the tail gaters are the insensitive ones IMHO. Homocidal/Suicidal death wishes do not belong on our nations highways, including 495.

  • It sounds like this guy was trying to be responsible. I’ve seen what happens when trucks hit a wire and a building gets damaged by it. Unfortunately, the choice he made did more damage to his truck and almost killed a guy in another car — thank God they are both alive!

  • “issued the company a dozen equipment violations”

    A Dozen??!!??

Come on guys, as a local company, you should be sensitive to this.

  • From The picture. The dumpster on the truck looked to be fully loaded with an unstable load. A quick turn of the wheel could cause a weight shift and the truck to roll. I’ve never seen an eastend ecology or a mattituck sanitation truck driving reckless. I dont tink redflannelman has either.

  • From the looks of the photograph taken at the scene. The dumpster of the truck appeared to be fully loaded with an unstable load. A quick turn of the steering wheel could shift the load and cause a roll over. I have never seen an Eastend Ecology or a Mattituck Sanitation truck being operated in a reckless manor and I seriously doubt redflannelman has either

  • I’m a redneck? Uneducated? Loser? I know what I observe not to be my imagination. My red flannel shirts set me back $55.00 a piece. Got a whole closet filled with ’em. Red is my favorite, also have other styles of Scottish tartans. Your handle is “trucker”, how’s that working out for ya? Must need a whole lot of education & knowledge for that occupation. Big paycheck too, huh?

  • What is your point ? You obviously couldn’t be a truck driver, since you have no idea what it involves. I’m sure trucker is well educated, and knowledgable, but you are not. Get a grip on life.

  • Let’s see now… green means go, red means stop (with an air brake endorsement) and flashing white lights mean OH CRAP it’s the police. Me get a grip?

  • Yes you are right green means go, red means stop. What is your point? You just backed up my claim, You have no idea how to drive a truck. His air brakes did work, by the way. P.S. Police use flashing red and blue lights.

  • Boy, you are a piece of work. What’s it like to go through life being stupid. My point is this… Driving a truck for a living is considered UNSKILLED LABOR . A trained chimp could do it. As Forest Gump said “stupid is as stupid does” . The idiot that overturned his truck on Factory is just that. As are you.

  • That’s the pot calling the kettle black. Driving a truck is not considered unskilled labor, moron. You need a certain class license, which requires a road test, with a DMV inspector. My question to you is, did you ever graduate from kindergarten, or are you still in it?

  • Hey idiot, follow this link, http://exchanges.state.gov/jexchanges/private /trainee_unskilled.html CASE CLOSED

  • Follow the link idiot. CASE CLOSED

  • Hope you don’t go catatonic with the following info… Good luck idiot.

  • Sure hope you don’t go catatonic over the following info… Good luck idiot.

  • If you work in a factory and have had an accident at work within the past three years, you could be entitled to make a factory accident compensation claim. The accident in a factory must have caused you to suffer some form of personal injury, and somebody else must have been at fault for your accident.  Factory Injuries
