Greenport: Carnival of Hope kickoff date set

Alas! We’re just about ready to kick January out the door and welcome (I use that term loosely) February. Can spring be far behind?  It’s only 52 days away, in case anyone is counting!

Many on the North Fork braved frigid temperatures last Saturday afternoon to venture out and watch two pretty good basketball games.  Greenport High School played host to the Tucker teams from Mattituck.  Both games were exciting nail-biters and, I’m happy to report, Greenport came out ahead in both. Way to go, guys! The Porters hit the road this Friday to take on the Killer Bees of Bridgehampton at 6 p.m. but will be back home on Tuesday, Feb. 1, when they host the Southold First Settlers (JV plays at 4 p.m. and varsity at 5:45).
Southold Town’s 2011 Relay for Life is going to be a “Carnival of Hope.” It’s set for Saturday, June 4, at Jean Cochran Park in Peconic. The kickoff meeting will take place in the Mattituck High School auditorium on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. If you can’t make the meeting but wish to participate, fear not. Get in touch with them at [email protected] or 734-5050.

Birthday wishes go out this week to Cyndi Bofinger, Jamie Dinizio, Miguel Torres, Dayna Hooten and Steve Smith, all today, Jan. 27 Lindsay Corwin, Elissa Schott, Robbie Campbell, Nancy McAllister and Ralph Mims, Jr. on the 28th; Jenn Loper, Jeff Standish, Bob Campbell Sr. and Emily Latham on the 29th; Jim’s two aunts, Katherine “Cabby” Klos and Debby Barrett, along with Amber Hulse, Courtney Hulse and Ance Shelby on the 30th; my sister-in-law, Teresa O’Connell, Larry Rhodes and David Krumenacker on the 31st; Jason Pacholk, Naomi Biggs, Bob Moore and Stephanie Pendulik Edwards on Feb. 1; and my aunt Marie Heaney, Danny Hansen and Doug Hubbard on the 2nd.

Thirty years ago this Saturday, Jan. 29, an event occurred that changed my life and Jim’s forever. It was one of the two best things to ever happen to us. God put in our keeping a baby girl whom we named Jennifer. Happy birthday, Jenn — with all the love our hearts can hold.

The happiest of anniversaries is wished this week to two of our dearest friends, June and Pete Harris, as they celebrate 38 years of married life on Jan. 28.
