Southold-Peconic: Blood drive, Little League, Coaches for Cancer

01/24/2011 1:51 PM |

You’re probably aware of the critical need for blood donors. Consider donating at the Southold Fire Department’s main firehouse on Wednesday, Feb. 2, between 2:15 and 8 p.m. Those who donate during dinnertime will enjoy a complimentary spaghetti dinner. Your help is appreciated.

Belated happy birthday to little Andrew Zaneski, grandson of Georgine Zaneski of Peconic, who blew out two candles on Jan. 22. Steve Smith celebrates today, the 27th; Harriet Enright, who turns 90, Rich Feeley and Jeff Standish celebrate on the 29th; Kerri Frend’s special day is Feb. 1; and Allie Krupski and Lisa Vincinanza will cut cakes on the 2nd.

Keep Saturday, Feb. 5, open for Southold Fire Department’s steak night from 6-9 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and include a complete steak dinner plus beer, wine and soda. See any department member for tickets or stop by the main house.

Baseball season may seem like a long way off, but it’s just around the corner. Sign-ups will take place Feb. 1, 2, and 3 from 6-8 p.m. in the elementary school lobby. More information can be found at northforklittleleague.net.

Myles Williams, a member of Southold’s seventh-grade boys’ basketball team, has been named male student athlete of the week. Freshman point guard Justina Babcock was the female athlete of the week for her efforts on the junior varsity basketball team, and senior Jake DeSimone was fan of the week.

When you combine the action of the SHS girls’ basketball with a worthy cause, everybody wins. All are invited to attend the Coaches for Cancer event on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 4:30 p.m. in the high school gym. Support the team as it takes on McGann-Mercy High School and purchase some goodies donated by Southold 7-Eleven, Dunkin’ Donuts and New Beginnings Salon. There will also be a bake sale, face painting, 50/50 raffle and other fun activities. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

A baby shower was held for Krystyna (Surozenski) Duffy last Sunday at the home of Bernadette Taplin. Krystyna and her husband, Brian, live in Massachusetts and will welcome their first child in February.
Southold Free Library is offering free AARP-IRS tax assistance on Mondays and Thursdays beginning Feb. 3. Call 765-2077 for an appointment. State and federal forms and booklets are available at the library.

A food drive will be held at the library during February. Drop off a donation of nonperishable food items and help out your neighbors during the difficult winter months.

  • Buy a house near an exisiting gun club, and you’re going to have to deal with noise. This sounds like a B.S. roundabout way to force an otherwise compliant gun club out of existance.

  • ITS AMAZING THIS STATE FUNCTIONS AT ALL. I HAVE BEEN HERE FOR 2 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER MET SO MANY ARROGANT ,CONDESCENDING, POMPOUS, AND RUDE PEOPLE. THIS STATES MOTTO SHOULD BE ‘ IT’S ALL ABOUT ME’. YOU ALL COMPLAIN ABOUT EVERYTHING AND SAY HOW YOU HATE IT HERE BUT NEVER DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. YOU PEOPLE NEED TO GET A LIFE AND QIUT BEING WHIMPS AND COMPLAINING ABOUT EVERTHING FORM GAS PRICES TO TAXES. THE COMPLAINERS HAVE NEVER BEEN OUT OF SUFFOLK I GUESS BECAUSE THERE ARE ALOT OF BETTER PLACES TO LIVE THEN THIS CESSPOOL. LEAVING HERE FINALLY! OKAY NOW LETS HERE YOUR WHINING.

  • How about some actual reporting on the specifics of what the gun store owners allegedly did? If you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that this whole thing is pretty much nonsense.

That, and it has nothing to do with trap and skeet shooting in a different county. If people don’t like the noise, they shouldn’t move nest to a gun club (or an airport, raceway, busy road, etc.). If you really want to see what being disturbed by noise at all hours is like, try living next to a volunteer fire department (with a really, realy, really loud horn). Although eventually it just belends into the background.

  • Kate Browning will stop at nothing, and use any means to try and close a legitimate business. I thought the American Justice system held people to be innocent until proven guilty? She makes some suggestions of criminality that toe the line of litigation. Having seen the “evidence” against Mr. Wroobel, Punxatawny Phil could probably get him acquitted. Some of the folks that moved next to the range have broken the law in their efforts to get the facility closed, and will use any means to get what they want. They carefully state small portions of documents, ignoring what shows their stance to be merit-less, harass legal patrons of the range, and make wild and unsubstantiated accusations, which are always found to be unsubstantiated. If you don’t like airplanes, don’t move next to an airport! Now be a grown-up and stop this foolishness!

  • Yeah, cause suppressors work really well on m Beretta shotgun… makes the balance and swing all the more better.

So… have you ever actually fired a shotgun???

  • Kate, open up the law 101 text, and carefully look up “Due Process” and “innocent until proven guilty”

  • These guys surpressed and AK also.

  • If people don’t like the noise. Why did they move into that area? The fault lays with them. If the County Executive and Prosecutor are so concerned about “Quality Of Life” issues. Then why isn’t the law prohibiting “Loud Motorcycles, Cars and Trucks being enforced as well as the laws prohibiting the sale and installation of modified exhaust devices NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law, 375-31, 375-31a as well as 381-11 & 381-12

  • Mark should sue these people for harassment. He has a legal business in a location well before the houses were built. If someone didn’t like the sounds of guns being fired they should not have bought a house near a gun range.

  • So he was based upon this information he was arrested but has not beet ot trial nor convicted seems very un american So many politicians have been accused and still hold their office maybe they should be removed pending convicition? And lets not forget that the shooting range was there long before the homes were if you buy a home next to an airport you cant complain about the noise from the planes Common sense people!!

  • Re: “Question is who was there first? The residents or the range?”

I believe that the Suffolk County Trap & Skeet Range opened in 1956 — about 54 years ago. The housing developer was swindling, er I mean selling houses to prospective suckers around 1991 — some 35 years after the Suffolk County Trap & Skeet Range was established.

    Thank you.

    With Liberty and Free $peech?,
    Defender “

  • This is just NIMBYism. The range was there first, there was no trouble till the homes were built there. I think the skeet range is great! It’s a lot of fun to shoot skeet, the neighbors ought to try it.

  • Interesting that they choose a day that the range is closed to hold their little dog and pony show, since there will be no one there to refute their bogus and inflammatory claims.

  • Pure and simple BS from the residential neighbors. They knew they were buying next to a range when they got their homes. Were they actually stupid enough to think they could then have things their way? Just like the people back home in Neb. that deliberately bought land and built homes next to pig farmers. Then had the stupidity to try and sue the pig farmer for the stench. Such people are beyond any normal range of intelligence or common sense. Now they want the politicians to step in and put their jobs on the line for their own lack of intelligence and common sense. If they don’t like the range, then get the hell of the county and practice their stupidity somewhere else!

  • It does not sound like a war zone. It sounds like a trap and skeet range that is much quieter than a rifle and pistol range. (and 1000 times quieter than a war zone) You people make me sick!! If you move next to an airport, a rail line or highway then you should expect to hear noises related to those activities. I would like to offer a simple solution. The residents that don’t like it can move next to a cemetery. Please put your real estate adds in shooting publications. Maybe the county should consider condemning your houses and bulldozing them.

  • She has long wanted the range closed, as did her predecessors, as it is in her district, and although it has operated there for decades, a small but vocal group of homeowners who bought their homes AFTER the range was there have used all sorts of tactics, some legal and some not, to try and dissuade legal customers and to get the facility shuttered.
From a lot of the things we’ve learned, the case against Mr. Wroobel and the others is questionable at best, and the presumption of innocence is (as far as I know) STILL in the US legal system. This is just one more in a long list of ways Leg Browning has used to try and accomplish the closing of a great facility, where thousands of shooters go for enjoyment. Why we should close the range, and not seek another vendor if things went poorly for Mark (which is unlikely) is not clear. The County and Mr. Wroobel have invested a significant amount of money in the range, and it is a terrific facility, the only public range (that we’re aware of) that offers Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. It is used by many Instructors, Charitable Groups, and was host for a Boy Scout Camporee event where 125 people shot trap, many for the first time. This is nothing more than a frustrated law maker trying to inflict her will on the citizens of Suffolk County

  • Very poor reporting, as usual what you are told you write. At least investigate and state the facts.
By the way Suffolk county does not fund the range, actually the range is leased and creates a lot of jobs and revenue for the community from gas, food, ammunition, taxes and now even giving a half-assed reporter a job.

  • Back in 1998, I learned to shoot 16-yard trap at Suffolk Trap and Skeet. I spent the next three years, nearly year-round, shooting 16-yard trap. It is a wonderful skill, hobby and passion, the art and sport of shooting clays. Whomever disagrees with the location of this site, I’d like to ask them simply…1). do you hate the location of Suffolk T&S or do you simply hate guns? 2). Do you hate the guns or is the gun-onwers you truly despise? 3). Or do you hate the guns, the gun-owners as well as the Second Amendment, “The right to bear arms”? And before you answer those questions and mumble about the shots which ring out within ear shot, know a few things first…did you buy your homes while wearing ear protection or did the real estate agent play rock music loudly as you surveyed the property? And before you babble any further, know this…the same men and women who train at Suffolk Trap and Skeet are very often the same men and women who will either defend the United States of America or already have; my friend who trained me to shoot 16-yard trap in 1998 was a United States Marine Corps officer, retired and most of the men on the line to my left and right were veterans.

  • I love how quickly the gun enthusiasts get energized. The NRA has always been a force. The truth is you are all suporting an alleged felon who may have sold illegal assault weapons that could be killing our kids or police officers in the streets. Nobody seems to be talking about the crimes and the affect it can have. Wroobel should not be running it to make money off of the tapayer’s property to fund his defense. Kate Browning is also the only one pointing out that the county is losing money at the facility. All of the conservative gun lovers don’t complain about this budget hole even though its causing your taxes to go up. Be consistent on the issues!!!

  • The key word being “alleged”.

“May have” doesn’t cut it out in the real world, nor does the phrase “illegal assault weapon” which is an artificial and politically-inspired anti-gun term.

Put some concrete facts into the issue, please – not bluff, BS and smoke & mirrors.

  • Any range owner be they for profit or Non profit really needs to look at the surrounding land around them and purchase all they can. Years ago land could have been had for a song now property owners hold a gun to our heads at sale time. I’ve warned dozens of range operators don’t trust your neighbor if they tell you you have first dibs on adjoining property. Get it in writing & make an offer every chance you get.
What’s pathetic is the DA uses tax payer money to go after an easy mark. Sportsmen have to pay 4 ways to prove they are in the right. Once in sporting supplies tax, property tax, donations & personal out of pocket expenses to fight off wild definitions from self defined law zelots. This must be the big come back for loosing to Chwick on the colored gun suit. We can’t beat em so we’ll create a crime to make everyone look bad.

  • This range should be closed, it is too near homes that house children. How about considering some of the Grumman property in Calverton for a range. there is plenty of woods and area to screen some of the noise, and there is not alot of housing in the area….I’m sure the people residing at the National Cemetary would not mind….

  • This range has been around for a long time and people who bought a house in the area must of had a paper bag over their head and ear plugs in their ears. As far as the owner being charged in some ALLEDGED crimes, both parties will have their day in court and let’s see who walks out of the smoke & dust , a winner. It’s my opinion that this is a political try at closing down the shooting range because some politicians are from anti-guns factions.

  • I feel that at this time, the call to arms has been raised, that the easiest way to stop Kate Browning from creating all these problems for law abiding gun owners and hobbyists, is to vote her out of office. Silence the hate filled rhetoric of a Ms. Browning, whose last name is the same as a very well known and respected weapons designer, John Moses Browing, who brought us the 50 cal Browning Machine Gun, the Colt 45 (1911) , and the BAR(Browning Automatic Rifle).
I hope that the County will not take any action until due process is followed, and either the charges are dropped or all the various cases are adjudicated, and in anticpation of the civil lawsuits brought against Ms Browning and the organizations that are acting on her behalf and at her direction. And that Ms. Browning when she has again failed in her quest, knows when it is time to fish or cut bait.

  • I am not a gun enthusiast, a member of the NRA, a conservative, nor am I supporting an alleged felon. I am a liberal, female, over 50 year old person who likes to trap and skeet shoot. So does my husband. There are very few places where we can indulge in shooting. It is a skill. A hobby. It is fun. you ought to try it. Unfortunately, like so many others, you are probably afraid of guns. That’s fine. Some people are afraid of dogs. That is also irrational, but so is buying a house near a facility such as this and then complaining. . . . but I digress. . . . I pay for lots of skate parks, ball parks, schools, and other government facilities that are a bigger money drain and I don’t enjoy. If this person has indeed committed a crime, then management should be given to someone else. This facility must remain open for the enjoyment of those of us who practice the skill of shooting.

  • This is absolutely rediculous, if you don’t like the noise of guns, DON’T MOVE half a mile from a shooting range. This entire ordeal is so completely rediculous! There is no valid arguement behind these arrests becasause nothing even relatively illegal occured. What is the whole idea behind innocent until proven guilty. It seems to only apply to chosen individuals. If Kate Browning or Kathleen Rice was indicted on suspicion of a crime, they would still go about their everyday lives until convicted. But because its the owner of a gun store, all of these anti-gun nuts are going to come out and attempt to shut down a business that has absolutely nothing to do with the alleged crimes. Last time I checked there were no weapons being sold at Suffolk Trap and Skeet, but yet they will attempt to use this bogus arrest to close it down. It is as if to say that Mr. Wroobel owned a grocery store we should shut that down too as a result of his all be it bogus arrest at his other business. This makes no sense whatsoever, people say it is the pro-gun people who are crazy and irrational. Here is yet another case where Anti-gun enthusiasts will use whatever they can to further violate our second ammendment right. Do you know the first thing Hitler did when he came to power? Ordered the surrender of all firearms… seems to me as if we’re headed in that direction.

  • i remember you from youtube. you never cease to amaze, yet i wouldnt expect any different from you — defending a guy selling illegal assault weapons (typical NRA member), and a gun range that offends local residents, yet you call a guy that rides a motorcycle by your house a dirtbag, a sociopath, a terrorist, and chase them down the street with your camera in the hopes of getting them ticketed. take your own advice — motorcyclists like to take rides out in the country, its your fault for moving into the area, especially a busy 4-way stop… your loud pipes “quality of life” disruption is your OWN DOING.

  • In 1958 there were nine houses on Gerard Road and about ten houses on Yaphank Ave. Also, in the area was a private trap and skeet shoot. Today the same area has at least three hundred homes all in The Carmans River watershed. All the homes have cesspools and lawns that many fertlize and use pesticides on. All the cesspools and chemicals leach into Carmans River. So the question becomes, who is the biggest polluter? the trap shoot or the three hundred homes ?

  • Typical NRA member???? First off..the guy was NOT CONVICTED of selling illegal assault weapons. If you looked into the matter further…you would see that this whole matter is BS. They arrested EVERY gunshop owner in Nassau County on the same charge. If the gun range offends residents..let them move. The range was there long before the houses were. My friend lives by JFK…he is now trying to have JFK shut down as it offends local residents due to noise!!!!

  • Hard to suppress a shotgun. Also a suppressor would shrink down the pellet spread needed to break the targets!!!
