Southold-Peconic: Blood drive, Little League, Coaches for Cancer

You’re probably aware of the critical need for blood donors. Consider donating at the Southold Fire Department’s main firehouse on Wednesday, Feb. 2, between 2:15 and 8 p.m. Those who donate during dinnertime will enjoy a complimentary spaghetti dinner. Your help is appreciated.

Belated happy birthday to little Andrew Zaneski, grandson of Georgine Zaneski of Peconic, who blew out two candles on Jan. 22. Steve Smith celebrates today, the 27th; Harriet Enright, who turns 90, Rich Feeley and Jeff Standish celebrate on the 29th; Kerri Frend’s special day is Feb. 1; and Allie Krupski and Lisa Vincinanza will cut cakes on the 2nd.

Keep Saturday, Feb. 5, open for Southold Fire Department’s steak night from 6-9 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and include a complete steak dinner plus beer, wine and soda. See any department member for tickets or stop by the main house.

Baseball season may seem like a long way off, but it’s just around the corner. Sign-ups will take place Feb. 1, 2, and 3 from 6-8 p.m. in the elementary school lobby. More information can be found at northforklittleleague.net.

Myles Williams, a member of Southold’s seventh-grade boys’ basketball team, has been named male student athlete of the week. Freshman point guard Justina Babcock was the female athlete of the week for her efforts on the junior varsity basketball team, and senior Jake DeSimone was fan of the week.

When you combine the action of the SHS girls’ basketball with a worthy cause, everybody wins. All are invited to attend the Coaches for Cancer event on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 4:30 p.m. in the high school gym. Support the team as it takes on McGann-Mercy High School and purchase some goodies donated by Southold 7-Eleven, Dunkin’ Donuts and New Beginnings Salon. There will also be a bake sale, face painting, 50/50 raffle and other fun activities. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

A baby shower was held for Krystyna (Surozenski) Duffy last Sunday at the home of Bernadette Taplin. Krystyna and her husband, Brian, live in Massachusetts and will welcome their first child in February.
Southold Free Library is offering free AARP-IRS tax assistance on Mondays and Thursdays beginning Feb. 3. Call 765-2077 for an appointment. State and federal forms and booklets are available at the library.

A food drive will be held at the library during February. Drop off a donation of nonperishable food items and help out your neighbors during the difficult winter months.
