Greenport: GHS basketball undefeated!

The magic number is 159, folks. That’s how long we have to wait until the first day of summer. No cold! No snow to shovel! No home heating bills! I hope it comes quickly.

The one thing that keeps me sane during the long cold winter is GHS basketball. Our team is not only undefeated but is ranked No. 1 among Class C schools across New York State. This is quite an accolade. Congratulations to Coach Al Edwards and the team.

Speaking of basketball, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Duke Blue Devils when it comes to things that keep me sane during the winter. They, too, are undefeated as of this writing, much to the chagrin of Chris Doucett, Jade Duell, Sam Carey, Lou Swain and Cedric Davis, to name just a few!

The Greenport High School Drama Club has a big weekend coming up.  They’ll be performing “The Wizard of Oz” this Friday and Saturday evenings, Jan. 15-16, in the school auditorium. Curtain time is 7 p.m. and tickets will be available at the door.

Steve Burt received lots of recognition New Year’s Eve when the New England and London Book Festival awards were announced. ”FreeK Camp” won honorable mention for Best Teen Fiction in both competitions. Additionally, because previously unconsidered books were allowed in several categories of the New England Festival, “A Christmas Dozen” took honorable mention for Best Spiritual and “Even Odder” earned honorable mention for Best Collection. Congratulations!

The GHS senior class will hold a fundraising spaghetti dinner in the school cafeteria on Thursday, Jan. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults. I’ll try to get information on the cost for kids and seniors by next week. Tickets can be purchased at the door and takeout will be available.

Special healing wishes go out to Jim Sage, who was involved in a freak accident at work this past week.  I hope it won’t be long, Jim, until you’re back to good-as-new condition.

A little birdie told me that Mark Berry will be turning the big five-oh on Jan. 15 and that his cousin Carolee “Deets” Doucett accomplished the same feat Dec. 30. The happiest of birthdays to both of them from with love from Claudia, Taylor, Vanessa and Hayley. Mark got an early birthday present this weekend when his Jets won a nail-biter against the Colts.

Also celebrating birthdays during the upcoming week are Marion Kruszeski today, Jan. 13; Neil MacDonald on the 14th; Brian Quillin, Jacob Thorp, Faith Bullock and my cousin Tony Bondarchuk on the 16th; Jim Van Brunt on the 17th; Hezikah Mangham on the 18th; and Elise Webb and Sean Ryan on the 19th.
