Oysterponds: OHS hosts winter series of crafts workshops

Welcome to Joan Frisicano, newly appointed Oysterponds interim principal and special ed coordinator. She is rolling up her sleeves and learning how special our students are. Please join with me and give her a hearty dose of Oysterponds hospitality when you meet her.

There will be an organ recital at Orient United Methodist Church this Sunday, Jan. 16, at 4 p.m. featuring Jason Cockerill on the historic Hook and Hastings Tracker pipe organ. A freewill donation to the Don McNeill Memorial Fund will be greatly appreciated. Fellowship and refreshments will follow.

At the EMCA general meeting on Saturday, Jan. 22, Heather Lanza will review the Comprehensive Plan from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees will be invited and able to participate.

At 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 13, there will be a meeting of the Orient/East Marion Park District at Oysterponds Elementary School. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

OHS is hosting a winter series of traditional crafts workshops. Call 323-2480 for more info or to sign up. The series begins next Saturday, Jan. 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. with the first of three workshops on traditional rug hooking, led by Gail Horton. The cost is $65. Visit OysterpondsHistoricalSociety.org for other upcoming workshops.

After learning of the passing of East Marioneer Elaine Tuthill, I heard the comment “work on your bucket list” — enjoy each minute, you never know. Elaine was way too young to have left us this past week and lived such a healthy lifestyle. Oysterponds extends sympathy to her husband, Halsey; their daughters, Kelly and Carrie; her mom, longtime East Marioneer Anna Schaller; and her many friends and neighbors. Her funeral is today, Jan. 13, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport.

Orient’s Gladys Jaworecki and her husband, Joe, were “fixtures” on Youngs Road for decades. Sunday, Gladys’ life was celebrated in a Mass at St. Patrick in Southold, where she was given a special send-off to her new life reunited with “gentleman Joe.” We all extend sympathy to Michael, Eddie, Sue and Claire on her death. May your many friends surround you and bring you comfort.

St. Agnes Church member Vincent Ward passed away last Thursday and family are mourning his death, which gave new definition to “your long journey home.” Making arrangements from a distance is not always easy but God was with Vince’s bride, Pat, and son, Jim, who flew him north from Florida with a stopover in Atlanta, where they narrowly escaped the closing of the airport due to the pending southern blizzard. All ended well as strong tailwinds blew them quickly to N.Y. once they finally took off. Military man Vince was showing his new heavenly sense of humor as he orchestrated his own transportation from beyond. May he rest in peace.
