Richard J. Fox

Richard J. Fox of Southold died on January 28, 2011, at the age of 79.

He was born on April 24, 1931, in Jamaica, New York, to Herbert and Margaret Fox. A graduate of Farmingdale College, he enjoyed a seventeen-year career with American Laubscher Corp., from which he retired as treasurer.

Richard grew up in Cambria Heights, New York, and was a great fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers and enjoyed walking with his brothers to Belmont Race Track. Racing became a lifelong favorite hobby.

In 1958, Rich’s older brother Herb met Eileen, a lovely young lady, at the neighborhood bus stop and thought she and Rich would be perfect for each other. They were introduced and were happily married for over 51 years. Together they raised a wonderful family and took great joy in their seven grandchildren.

Rich was a quiet man and had many loves — his wife, Eileen, “his rock”; his children; and his grandchildren. Another one of his loves was his horses! He was also a shy man but a funny man with a kind heart. When his health started to fail, he tried to enjoy all his normal activities, football games, horses and spending time with friends.

A gentleman — a gentle man — who will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen, whom he married on May 2, 1959, in Cambria Heights, N.Y.; his children, Richard (Lisa) of Miller Place, Cathleen Hirt (Edward) of Bohemia, James (Suzanne) of Northport; two brothers, Herbert and John; a sister, Dale Crisafulli; seven grandchildren, Samantha Fox, Stephen Fox, Christine Hirt, Bryan Hirt, Trevor Fox, Maggie Fox and Lily Fox; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Fox, in 1992 and brother, Robert Fox.

The family received friends at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Patrick R.C. Church by Father Peter Garry. Interment was at St. Patrick R.C. Cemetery.

Memorial donations to the American Lung Association would be appreciated.
