Southold-Peconic column: a cold-weather li-brrr-ary program

Who’s had enough of snow and winter? Though each day brings us closer to spring, the calendar reminds us that we still have a long way to go. Hang in there!

A great way to survive a North fork winter is to join Southold Free Library’s adult winter reading program. When you register you’ll receive a bag containing word puzzles, review forms and even some chocolates. Fill out the forms, hand them in and be eligible for prizes like gift certificates to Border’s, Elbow East, Blue Duck Bakery and Hart’s Hardware or two tickets on the Hampton Jitney for the do-as-you-please bus trip to New York City in April. Playaways, books on tape, CDs, as well as print media are all acceptable. Get started today!

While you’re at the library, take a chance on a silver necklace and matching earrings donated by Tom and Jenny Schlect. The drawing will be held Feb. 11, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

This weekend be sure to catch a performance of “Lend Me a Tenor” at Southold High School. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21 and 22, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, the 23rd, at 2 p.m. Admission is $10; seniors and students pay $6. Tickets can be purchased at Southold Free Library or the SHS guidance office.

A Small Ensembles concert will be held at SHS on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. Chase the winter blues away with the talents of our student musicians.

Belated happy birthday to Libby Koch, who celebrated Jan. 19. Terry Siejka and Beth Wineberger cut their cakes today, the 20th; Dan Tuthill on the 21st; Kristine Smith on the 24th; Julia Jaklevic turns 8 on the 24th; and Amy Gammon has her special day on the 25th.

At Southold junior-senior high, Matt McCarthy of the eighth-grade basketball team has been named male student athlete of the week, the eighth-grade volleyball player Claudia Steinmuller earned female athlete of the week, and Anne Davey and Lauren Ficurilli were the fans of the week for volunteering to sell raffle tickets during the varsity basketball game against Greenport.
