Village garage gains site plan approval
The Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council’s proposed village garage cleared its last permit hurdle when the Southold Town Planning Board gave its site plan unanimous approval on Jan. 10.
The council is building the garage on the Village Green in Cutchogue, using a post-and-beam carriage house kit from Connecticut-based Country Carpenters. The building will house a 1926 Model T Ford donated to the council by Parker Wickham of Mattituck, as well as other local artifacts from the early 20th century.
Council director Zachary Studenroth was unavailable for comment Tuesday, but last year he described the group’s plans in an interview with The Suffolk Times.
“We’re really all about the 18th and 19th centuries. All of that’s a lot of fun. We cover 300 years, but not the 20th century,” Mr. Studenroth said. “The automobile had an impact on the farming industry. Cutchogue was changing rapidly in the early 1900s. The truck was a new way of getting farm produce off to the train. We can tell that story now.”
The council is sending an appeal to its members and the community to raise $40,000 for the building, which it hopes will be open to the public by this summer.
