Oysterponds-Orient-East Marion: potluck, craft workshop, lecture series and steak night
All are invited to the Orient-East Marion Park District monthly meeting tonight at 7p.m. at Oysterponds School.
The East Marion Community Association is planning a Cabin Fever Potluck on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the East Marion firehouse. Please bring a dish to serve six. Beverages will be provided. Confirm your attendance or be spontaneous. Call 477-2819 or e-mail [email protected].
The next OHS Winter Craft series workshop will be “Dying to Knit and Crochet” with Christine Hensen Thorpe on March 2, 9 and 16 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $15 a person plus materials. Register by Feb. 20 by visiting Oysterpondshistoricalsociety.org or calling 323-2480.
Anne MacKay will lead the next program in the OHS Winter Lecture Series, entitled “About Sea Shanties.” She will talk about the history and types of songs sung on sailing vessels and how maritime music bridges the globe. Come prepared to sing. There is limited seating for the 4 p.m. event so call 323-2480 to sign on.
Former Village Laner Susan Madigan got in touch to share some exciting news this week. Her daughter Alix (whom many of you know) produced a movie called “Winter’s Bone,” which has won four Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Susan is anxiously counting down the days till Feb. 27, when she can see Alix walk the red carpet. Congratulations all around.
Under the heading ‘other good news,’ rumor has it Sharon and Jim Bogden are the proud parents of a gorgeous 4-month-old British crème-colored golden retriever named Glory. We all know how lucky she is to have landed in their home since they are the most loving parents ever (canine and kids both) and we all wish them the best.
Speaking of pets, many of you know that our 17-year-old Dolly Cat left us in December. In an obvious moment of insanity, we adopted twin 9-week-old kittens a month ago. I hadn’t had a kitten in 17 years so it was a major surprise when MaggieMae (twin of Makenzie) jumped in the fridge. Then it brought back the memory of my column’s very first “visualize this” over a decade ago. At the time, Bill Bahrenburg Sr. was sharing son Claeys’ beautiful home down on the bay. It was newly renovated with all the state-of-the-art gadgets including a new one to me, a double glass-door fridge. Bill had also just adopted a lively and a slightly wild feline. My visualize this was that somehow the cat had gotten locked inside the refrigerator and, thanks to the glass doors, Bill walked by to see him with four paws and nose pressed against the door howling for liberation — or else the story would not have had a happy ending. OK, help me out here. Anyone remember that cat’s name?
The OCC youth group reported a wonderful adventure this past weekend at snow camp, aka camp deep freeze, in the Adirondacks. They did many of the activities one would do at summer camp but in the cold instead. They are lucky to have Bob Van Cleef, the world’s oldest youth group leader.
Say a prayer for Elyse Romano, who will be sporting a new hip by the time you read this, and a small thank you, God, for Pep Kalin’s release from ICU.
