Cutchogue-New Suffolk: One-woman comedy, leadership training, Empty Bowls Soup Supper

February is the shortest and maybe the coldest month of the year, yet it seems to have more celebrations, holidays, observances and events than most. We start by honoring the freeing of slaves with National Freedom Day; proceed with Groundhog Day, National Wear Red Day (to raise awareness of heart disease in women), the Chinese New Year, Superbowl Sunday and Valentine’s Day; and we end with Presidents’ Day. Phew.

Looking for that something special for your valentine? Stop by Cutchogue Presbyterian Church between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 12, and peruse the wares offered at the annual Valentine’s Antique Show. There will be lots of jewelry, fun valentine’s gifts, baked items and more.

Happy birthday wishes to Emily Gatz and Christian Figurniak, both of whom turn 13 today, Feb. 10. And happy birthday to Joni Friedman, who celebrates on Feb. 12.

Last month’s original one-woman comedy by Susan Grathwohl Dingle at Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library left audience members with smiles on their faces and laughter in their hearts. This poet, performer and stand-up therapist, beautifully combined her talents and skills to create “EnLIGHTtainment.” Her next engagement is at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at the Creation Station behind Cutchogue Methodist Church. Come and enjoy a break from the cold, snowy winter. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. For more information, contact music director Mary Agria at 765-5667.

The library is chock full of activities and events for your enjoyment and edification. Check out the calendar section or stop by in person to see what’s going on this week.

Students in grades 6-8 are invited to “Got Attitude? Get What You Want Out of Life,” a fun and interactive leadership training workshop. It takes place on Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Mattituck High School library between 10 a.m. and noon. The program is sponsored by the Cutchogue East Elementary School PTA.

For the past year, students, parents and community organizations have been working hard under the tutelage of Jean Fallot and Lee Harned to create more than 200 bowls for the Empty Bowls Soup Supper to benefit Community Action of Southold Town’s food pantry. The event takes place Friday, Feb. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the high school. Check the Calendar for details.

While making a bowl, I had the opportunity to catch up with Maria Golde. She told me that MHS 2001 graduate Danny Golde graduated from Maritime College in 2005 and is now serving with the U.S. Navy. He is stationed in San Diego, where he is training and awaiting his deployment. Thank you, Danny, for your service and God bless.

Come be a part of history! “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” Mattituck High School’s first musical in over 20 years, is on tonight and tomorrow, Feb. 10 and 11, at 7:30 in the high school auditorium. Tickets are $7 and available at the door.

Karen and Dan Letteriello recently had a proud parental moment attending a ceremony honoring their son Dan as a scholar athlete. Congratulations!

Have a good week!
