Hockey fever swept over the Village of Greenport this week.

First, there was the special visit by former professional player and Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame member Buzz Deschamps, who offered tips and advice to the young members of the Greenport Pirates Hockey Club during a skills clinic Wednesday evening. It continues Saturday with second annual Greenport Hockey Festival at the Mitchell Park rink.

Mr. Deschamps, who was drafted by the New York Rangers in 1955, is probably best known for holding the single season scoring record of 59 goals for the old Long Island Ducks minor league team. He was a professional NHL scout and is currently a coach for Stony Brook University’s hockey club. Pros of a different kind, the New York Islander’s mascot Sparky the dragon and the Islander’s Ice Girls, will be on hand for Saturday’s events, which include a chance to try the sport of curling and watching the youth hockey players in action.
