Alfred S. Pfeil Jr.

Former Cutchogue resident Alfred S. Pfeil Jr., known as “Al,” died Feb. 15 in New Bern, N.C. He was 83.

Born Feb. 27, 1927, in East Orange, N.J., to Louise and Alfred Pfeil Sr., he summered in Cutchogue for most of his life and lived there full-time for many years before retiring to New Bern.

Mr. Pfeil graduated in 1945 from the Pingry School in Summit, N.J., and in 1955 from the University of Maine, where he was vice president of the Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity and president of the ski team. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was posted to Ankara, Turkey, where he worked in military intelligence.

He was a manager for world trade at Allied Chemical International, division manager for international phosphate sales at Stauffer Chemical Company, and plant manager for Doggett Pfeil Company, before forming his own chemical export trading firm, DAPCo Trading Company.

Mr. Pfeil is survived by his wife, Peggy; his children, Wendy Westdahl, Dana Sachey, Heidi Brancati and Peter; his step-children, Jacqueline Doig and Dwight Doig; his sister, Barbara Bergen, of Cutchogue; ten grandchildren (who called him “Bones”); and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Carol.
