Mattituck-Laurel: Computer Crimes Unit presents assembly on cyberspace obstacles

With the beginning of March comes the anticipation that spring can’t be far away. Despite the unexpected weather this month brings, I think if you listen closely you may be able to hear the first signs of the season.

Today’s young people are very involved in social networking, which is sometimes difficult for parents to understand. With this increased ability to communicate anytime and anyplace comes cyber bullying, sexting and other unforeseen dangers to our children’s safety. On March 10, Detective Rory Forrestal of the Suffolk County Police Computer Crimes Unit will present an updated overview of cyberspace obstacles for students in grades 7-12. That evening, he’ll do the same for parents and the community in the high school auditorium at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend this informative and important presentation.

March begins with birthday celebrations for the following: Kim Anderson on the 4th, Mary Kate Brigham on the 5th and Pat Feiler on the 8th.

Nora and Tom Libretto are very proud parents. Their youngest son, Mike, is currently stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and lives in Hampstead, N.C. with his wife, Janelle and children, Skyler and Dominic. Mike has been part of the Marine Corps for more than a decade. The Corps sent him to law school at the University of Buffalo and since he graduated in 2008, he’s been practicing law as a defense attorney at Camp Lejeune. In September, he’ll begin pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Virginia. Best of luck, Mike!

This year’s PTSA Fashion Show is April 7 at Vineyard Caterers, and tickets, which are $50 each, will be on sale in the high school lobby March 15-17. Get a group together for an evening of fun and help support this organization.

I ran into Marissa Russo yesterday. She’d just returned from Honduras, where she and several Mattituck High School students spent a week soaking up the culture and building a house for a family in need. Tom Farrell coordinates this annual excursion and each year the students’ stories are filled with wonder and compassion and reflect true appreciation of how blessed they are to live here on the North Fork. Welcome home!
