Porters, Tuckers have plenty to play for tonight

Plenty of eyes in the Suffolk County high school boys basketball world will be focused on the Town of Southold tonight. Two games, one in Greenport and one in Mattituck, will determine the champions of two leagues.

The Stony Brook School Bears (13-2, 12-1 in League VIII) and the Greenport Porters (16-1, 12-1), who very well could meet for the Suffolk Class C title, will play tonight at Greenport High School, with the winner taking the league crown. It promises to be an intriguing matchup. Stony Brook has Long Island’s leading scorer in senior guard Tim Pandolfi, who averages 27.5 points per game. But the Bears should have their hands full defending against Greenport’s high-flying Dantré Langhorne, Tremayne Hansen and Jalen Shelby.

Stony Brook rides an eight-game winning streak into the game. Greenport has won its past four contests. When the teams played in Stony Brook on Jan. 20, the Porters prevailed, 55-47.

Meanwhile, the Mattituck Tuckers (13-4, 9-2 in League VII) already have a share of their first league title in 22 years, but the Tuckers would claim sole possession of first place with a victory over the visiting Center Moriches Red Devils (10-7, 8-3).

In their previous game, the Tuckers blew out the Southampton Mariners, 84-67, in an impressive performance on Friday night. The Tuckers played what Coach Paul Ellwood said was the best first half he had ever seen a Mattituck team play. They shot a sizzling 63.5 percent from the field as senior guard Tom Ascher registered a career-high 34 points.

The Tuckers also got a helping hand that night from the Wyandanch Warriors, who did them a big favor by upsetting Center Moriches, 68-64. Center Moriches was a 66-47 winner over Mattituck on Jan. 20.

Both games will start at 6:15 p.m.
