Francis Switzer Wippert Jr. of Greenport died March 21 at Eastern Long Island Hospital. He was 86.
Born Sept. 9, 1924, in Greenport to Francis Switzer and Madeline Latham Wippert of Orient, he attended school in Orient and graduated from Greenport High School in 1942. He attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, then joined the U.S. Navy, serving in both World War II and the Korean War.
In 1955, he and his wife, Angela, moved their family from Orient to Greenport. He worked for the U.S. government at Plum Island Animal Disease Center for 25 years.
Mr. Wippert is survived by his wife of 64 years; three children, Carol Goss, Deborah McAfee and Francis III; his brother, James; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will have a private service in his honor. Donations may be made to the North Fork Audubon Society or the North Fork Animal Welfare League.
