John W. Zurawski

John W. Zurawski of New Suffolk died on March 27, 2011. He was 92 years old.

“Smitty,” as he was known to many, was born on March 6, 1919, in South Jamesport to Walter and Anna (née Rakoczy). A Merchant Marine during World War II, he had been a local bayman.

He is survived by two children, John (Jean) Zurawski of Rensselaer, N.Y., and Cathie (Frank) Stadnicki of Shoreham, N.Y.; six grandchildren: John Zurawski, Colleen Valle, Brian Zurawski, Lynn Nyilas, Matthew Stadnicki and Thomas Stadnicki; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by five siblings, Edward and Vincent, Frances Majewski, Viola Lechmanski and Agnes Skrezec.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 31, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where prayer services will be held at 3 p.m. by Deacon Jeff Sykes. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 1, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Mattituck by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt with the assistance of the Ministry of Consolation. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery.
