Former Southold police chief Dan Winters died Feb. 23 in Florida after a long battle with cancer. He was 78.

Mr. Winters joined the Southold Police Department in 1957, worked his way up from sergeant to lieutenant and was named chief in 1981. He held that position until his retirement in 1991.

“He was a good man and a good chief,” said current Police Chief Ty Cochran. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”

Private funeral services took place in Florida.

The Winters family will receive friends Saturday, March 26, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where a memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m., the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, P.O. Box 1328, Flagler Beach, FL 32136, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
