Southold-Peconic: Sunshine Society and CYO fundraisers

Whether you turn on the television, open the newspaper or search the Internet, horrible images of the devastation in Japan are everywhere. Southold resident and U.S. Marine Rob Surozenski was off the coast of California aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan when the tsunami hit. His ship and four others have been sent to Japan to help out. Let’s keep everyone involved with this disaster in our thoughts.

Seaman Karl Szymczak (SHS Class of 2010) graduated from CTR “A” school and will continue on to “C” school in Pensacola, Fla. He will then be stationed in San Diego aboard the USS Chancellorsville, which is part of the USS Ronald Reagan fleet.

The St. Patrick Church youth group joined forces with the Southold Presbyterian Church youth group and raised $1,975 for Maureen’s Haven at their recent “Box City” night. Braving the chilly night for a good cause were Caitlyn Cassidy, Garrett DeFriest, Scott DeLong, Reese Dunne, Zach Ellis, Gayle Gammon, Paige Hudson, Susanna Kelley, Emma Leaden, James MacArthur, Ida Mollica, Gabriel Mollica, Megan Moran Sean Moran, David O’Day, Chris Reilly, Matt Reilly, Emma Romeo, Andy Rubin, Mary Beth Scott, Robert Keith Toman, Will Tondo, Julie Van Gorden and Megan Van Bourgondien.

Reservations are being taken for the Southold Sunshine Society’s fifth annual “Name Your Game” fundraising event on Monday, March 28, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Wharf House at Founders Landing. Enjoy a sandwich luncheon and an afternoon of game playing, complete with a prize for the high scorer at each table. Admission is $15 per person. Space is limited so gather your foursome and call Anne Swanson at 765-5735 to reserve your table.

Happy birthday to Patti Cummings, who celebrates today, March 17. Andrea Manfredi does the same on the 18th; John Helf, John Pontino and Judy Zaveski on the 19th; and Mary Jo Cowan on the 20th.

The St. Patrick’s CYO dinner dance is this Saturday, March 19, from 6-11 p.m. at the Soundview restaurant. Tickets are $40 each and are available by calling Eileen Tuthill at 765-2417 or Martha Tuthill at 323-2763. Proceeds benefit CYO programs and North Fork Parish Outreach.

Aileen Catapano has been chosen to compete in the 2011 Miss Teen New York/Long Island pageant on April 17 in the “Miss Teen” division. If she wins, she’ll go on to represent New York and Long Island at the national competition in Orlando, Fla. Anyone wishing to sponsor Aileen can contact the pageant coordinator at 1-800-279-0976.

Southold Free Library always has something going on. Children in pre-K through grade 2 paired up with students in grades 6 and up for the six-week “Book Buddies” program, the teens are preparing for the Advanced Battle of the Books competition and the adults are writing reviews for the winter reading program, which concludes on March 31.
