Slide Show: Chick Day at Talmage Farm Agway

Talmage Farm Agway in Riverhead hosted a free Chick Day event Saturday.

Hundreds of local residents attended the event, which was aimed to provide information for people interested in raising chicks.

An Agway manager said Saturday that the store has sold more than 4,000 birds in the past three months alone.

Several residents in attendance Saturday said the economy has them considering raising their own chickens for the eggs.

“People are curious to learn more about chickens whether they are considering raising them or are already raising them,” said Mark Bridgen director of Cornell Cooperative, who spoke at the event. “There has been an increase in the interest of raising chickens all over because the economy isn’t at its best, and eggs are expensive.”
