Cutchogue-New Suffolk: ‘Spring Awakenings’ art show; children’s musical

The beautiful purple and yellow crocuses underneath the sign at the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church are stirring as they prepare to blossom, weather permitting, just in time for a spring awakening in less than three weeks!

Speaking of spring awakenings, the Old Town Art and Crafts Guild proudly announces its second “Spring Awakenings” juried art competition in April. The entry fee is $15 per item ($10 for Guild members) with a limit of three entries per category. For more information, visit oldtownguild.com.

Gloria Russell was blessed with a week full of birthday celebrations. Happy birthday to Scott and Eric, who celebrated Feb. 22; Chris’s daughter, Carlie, on the 21st; and Eric’s son Steven on the 25th.

Join the cast of the brand-new children’s musical “Cat-Tales: What the Alley Cats Learn About Bullies,” written by composer and workshop director Mary Agria. Participants will have a chance to sing and dance their way through an original story that teaches how to cope with bullies! It will be performed in an “alley” on the stage at Creation Station, behind Cutchogue United Methodist Church. This musical play offers kids of all age — yes, adults are welcome — a chance to stretch their imaginations and those of audience members.

On Sunday, March 13, at 2 p.m., at Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library, Bill Pfeiffer, owner/operator of Island Diving and president of the Long Island Divers Association, will offer a glimpse into the world of undersea archeology in a free lecture sponsored by the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council. Bill was featured in the documentary “Beneath the Sea 2010” in which he completed the first recreational dive using a 1943 U.S. Navy hard-hat rig on a shipwreck off Long Island’s coast. Bill works closely with the Historical Diving Society and the Northeast Diving Equipment Group. Most recently, he began an exploration of the British sloop Sylph, which was wrecked off the coast of Southampton in 1815. Refreshments will be served after his lecture. Reservations are not required but space is limited.
