Health Beat: Be tobacco free with ELIH program

• Suffolk County’s Department of Health Services Learn to Be Tobacco Free Program will be offered by public health educator Janis Hurley at Eastern Long Island Hospital’s conference room in Greenport, 6-7 p.m. beginning Monday, April 18, and running for six successive Mondays through May 23 with a reunion class slated for Monday, June 13. Classes are at 6 p.m. Call 477-5121.

• The Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary’s annual car raffle co-sponsored with Mullen Motors is ongoing through May. Tickets are $50 and the winner has a choice between a 2011 Jeep Compass or $10,000 in cash. Call 477-5463.

• Dr. B. Hannah Ortiz, director of gynecologic oncology for the East End Health Alliance, and Linda John, founder and CEO of Corporate Family Network serving cancer survivors and advocates, will speak at an Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day program at East Wind Inn & Spa in Wading River on Saturday, April 9, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The program is being sponsored by The SASS Foundation for Medical Research, a nonprofit organization committed to education, research, and education in various hematological and malignant diseases. • Southold Free Library will host Dr. Michael Ciminiello, a fellowship-trained attending orthopaedic surgeon at Peconic Bay Medical Center, who will discuss how to choose the best solutions for knee and hip pain on Monday, April 4, at 7 p.m. The program will focus on arthritic knee and hip challenges and will detail the latest options available to patients to maximize their mobility and quality of life. • Audiologist Dr. Barbara Prestano of Peconic ENT will be conducting free hearing tests at Mattituck-Laurel Library on Friday, April 1, 1-3 p.m.
The library will host an eight-week program of T’ai Chi practice sessions on Wednesdays, beginning April 13, at 6:30 p.m. There’s a $30 fee for series.

• Shelley Scoggin of The Market in Greenport will teach a program about health benefits of various grains and demonstrate how to incorporate them into your diet on Wednesday, April 13, 6:30 p.m. There’s a $5 fee. Call 298-4134.

• Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library will host a yoga series on Thursdays at 6 p.m., beginning April 7 and running through June 16, with no class on April 21. The fee for the series is $60. Call 734-6360.

• San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing, Rehabilitation and Adult Day Care has announced its employees of the month for February and March: Karen Sage, evening supervisor in the dietary department, is the February employee of the month and Daisy Clasing, in the housekeeping department, is employee of the month for March.
Ms. Sage, originally from Riverhead and now living with her husband Mike in Greenport, has worked for San Simeon for 16 years. She  loves to serve the center’s residents, according spokesman Geoff Proud. When not working, she often spends time with her grandson Gavin.
Ms. Classing has been with the center for nearly three years. Born in Sri Lanka, she met her husband Karl when he was there with a Christian missionary group. They live in Southold and have two children. Ms. Clasing completed teachers college in Sri Lanka and for three years taught children in a leprosy school in India. She speaks several languages, is a talented seamstress and has worked as an interior decorator, Mr. Proud said.
