John James Corbley

John James Corbley of Greenport (formerly of Southold) passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 23 at the age of 84.

Born in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of Rose Gagen and John P. Corbley. As a veteran of World War II, he served as a Naval Air crewman in the TBF Avenger airplane. After graduating from Iona College and New York Law School, he joined Kemper Insurance Company and rose to the executive level.

In later years, he was the Executive Director of the Maryland Auto Insurance Fund, Secretary of Licensing and Regulation for the state of Maryland and President of AIPSO in Rhode Island. He was a member of the American, New York and Maryland Bar Associations and a member of Saint Agnes Church in Greenport and the Holy Name Society at Saint Margaret’s in the Bronx.

He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Renee Buck, in 1970 and his second wife, the former June Ferris, in 2007. He is survived by his children and daughters-in-law, John R. and Susan Corbley of Cutchogue, James Brian and Lyna Corbley of Poughkeepsie and Jeanne M. Corbley and Janet Stabile of Perry Hall, Md.; and five grandchildren, Patrick, Brendan, Liam, April and Geena.

The family received friends on Sunday, March 27, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A funeral Mass was held on Monday, March 28, at Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Cutchogue with Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt officiating. Interment was at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Southold. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
