Southold-Peconic: Sunshine Society fundraiser, students of the month

Several dozen dogs of all shapes and sizes enjoyed an afternoon of 'Spring Games' Saturday at the Southold Dog Park. The event was the first in a series of dog park parties scheduled for Saturdays between 1 and 3 p.m. at the park, behind the town recreation center in Peconic.

Maybe the welcome was not so warm, but spring is finally here! We can now put the winter behind us and move on to a fresh new season here on the North Fork.

Drop your old cell phones in the red box at the Southold post office and support the Cell Phones for Soldiers nonprofit organization. The phones will be recycled and the revenue from the recycled materials used to purchase phone cards for those serving overseas. Sarah Conlin of Mattituck started this program here two years ago. While she’s away at college, her parents, Steve and Suzanne, will keep her good work going. Please help if you can.

John Pontino’s birthday was not March 19, as I mistakenly stated in last week’s column, but his friend Caroline Boutcher’s was. Sorry for the error and belated happy birthday, Caroline!

Happy birthday to Patty Mellas today, March 24; Rob Surozenski and Joseph Manfredi, who turns 11, on the 28th; and David Witzke on the 30th.

Clare Browne won the children’s sweater and puzzle in Southold Free library’s March raffle. April’s prize offering commemorates the 125th anniversary of the invention of Coca-Cola. The winner will receive an ice bucket, tray, utensil caddy and “B.T. Summers’ guide to Coca-Cola.” The drawing will be held April 15.

Melissa and Chris Fanning are the proud parents of Maxwell Alexander, who was born March 7 weighing six pounds, three ounces. Also on little Maxwell’s welcoming committee are his big sister, Cadence; his grandparents, Mike and Sandy Davids; cousins Brynn and Peyton Dinizio; and great-grandmother Anita Stulsky of Greenport.

A retirement party for Su Harley of Southold was held last Saturday evening. Su has been an instructor at the Suffolk County Fire Academy for the past 17 years. During that time, Chief Harley was instrumental in providing training for our local firemen as well as those throughout Suffolk County.

Southold Elementary School will host its first Art, Science and Technology Night on this evening, March 24, from 7-8:30 p.m. Come and experience the sights and sounds of student work!

High school students of the month for February were: Jamie Grigonis, NJROTC; Caylie Jobes, technology; Caroline Liegey, family and consumer science; Michael Liegey, business; Anna Mahaffy, art; and Rodney Stankewicz, foreign language.

Junior high students of the month were: Gina Anasagasti, music; Mary Bertschi, art; Yunus Ilgin, ESL; Shayne Johnson, physical education; Grace O’Donnell, family and consumer science; Leah Passanant, foreign language; Lily Saeli, technology; Andrew Seifert, math; and Megan Van Bourgondien, social studies.
