Saturday was the day our town’s youngest ball players have been anticipating all winter: Little League’s opening day. I drove down Peconic Lane before the parade and saw lots of excited kids and their parents enjoying a chilly but fun-filled day. Good luck to all the players this season.

The Southold Town PBA will host its annual Easter egg hunt this Saturday, April 23, at 10 a.m. at the Southold high school athletic fields — rain or shine. Bring the kids for a morning of fun and a chance to win great prizes.

Southold High School’s new athletic director, Joe Braico, and his wife, Carol, are the proud parents of their first child, Gabriella Allison, who was born April 9 weighing 6 pounds, 9 ounces. It won’t be long before little Gabriella shows her spirit at the Settler games. For now, she’s working on sleeping through the night.

Grace Kowalski will blow out her very first birthday candle today, April 21. She is the daughter of Stephanie Kowalski and Ben Oliver and the granddaughter of Bob and Karen Kowalski and James and Sharon Cox. My husband, Bill, also celebrates today, the 21st, along with Joe Czartosieski, Bill Park and Mike Savage, who turns 60. Joe Crimi and Elaine White cut their cakes on the 23rd; and Kyle Van Duzer and Vinnie Macchirole on the 27th.

Happy anniversary to two very special couples who will toast their wedding anniversaries on April 26: my in-laws, Kay and Tom Byrnes, and my parents, Alec and Kathy Elak. Congratulations and best wishes for many more years together.

At the Southold Fire Department’s annual installation dinner last weekend, the following members were honored for exceptional service in 2010: Skip Goldsmith and Pete Grattan, Firefighters of the Year; Katherine Meehan, EMS Provider of the Year; Bruce Lehr, Chief Driver of the Year; and Chris Pickerell, Probationary Firefighter of the Year.

Congratulations to 14-year-old Sarah Sinning for making the Lady Islanders 19-and-under ice hockey team, and to Leah Baxendale for making the 14-and-under team. Great job!

Barbara Koch is organizing another golf league at Island’s End in Greenport that will run May 11 to Oct. 12. For details, call her at 765-3464 or Bill Fish at 477-0777, ext. 16.

It’ll be hard to resist the home-baked treats offered by the Mixed Nuts Relay for Life team at their bake sale this Saturday, April 23. They’ll be outside the Southold IGA from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Support the team and bring home some goodies for your weekend guests.

Jean Cochran was the winner of the Coca-Cola raffle at Southold Free Library. You’ll definitely want to get in on May’s raffle: Sang Lee Farms has generously donated a gift certificate for four weeks of fresh vegetables. The drawing will be held May 16.

Good luck to Tommy Surozenski, who departed for United States Coast Guard basic training earlier this week.

I wish all my readers a wonderful and blessed weekend filled with Easter and Passover traditions.
