The Village Board appears poised to turn down two requests for use of Mitchell Park — one for a Saturday morning farmers market and the other from Sts. Anargyroi and Taxiarhis Greek Orthodox Church for a festival on July 16 and 17. A vote is expected Monday night.

Nyce says a tax hike is needed
Greenport taxpayers, who have been led to believe there will be no tax hike in the fiscal year beginning May 1, could see a 2.5 percent increase in the rate if Mayor David Nyce gets his way. The mayor disclosed in a phone interview Tuesday that he intended to ask the Village Board to agree to the increase to help pay down $3 million to $4 million of Mitchell Park debt.

No-discharge zone proposed in Sound
The entire Long Island Sound, from the East River to Fishers Island, could soon join the Peconic Bay estuary as a federally designated no-discharge zone (NDZ), where it’s illegal for vessels of all sizes to dump sewage, treated or untreated, into the water.

Editorial: Now the real work begins
A no-discharge zone in the Long Island Sound is a step in the right direction, but there’s plenty more to be done to keep the waterway clean.
With few residents showing an interest in running for school board, we should show some gratitude toward the few residents who take the time to serve the community in this capacity.
