Eleanor Berton Ketcham

Eleanor Berton Ketcham died March 29 at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Greenport. She was 96.

She was born in Greenport on Jan. 4, 1915, to Agnes (Shipman) and Grant Sterling and graduated from Greenport High School in 1932. She married Benjamin Ketcham on July 6, 1940, in Greenport, where she lived her entire life.

Family members said she enjoyed playing Scrabble with them, and loved to read, especially poetry, which she also wrote on occasion. She loved to watch “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune” and enjoyed solving Arthur Swan’s Wit Twisters in The Suffolk Times, they said.

Predeceased by her husband in 1991, her brother, Walter Sterling, and her sister, Frances Steubenrauch, Ms. Ketcham is survived by her daughter, Janice Drinkwater of Greenport; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A private graveside service was held April 2 at Sterling Cemetery in Greenport, where interment followed. Arrangements were in the care of Horton-Mathie Funeral Home, Greenport.
