Health Beat: Participants sought for research study of Type 2 diabetics

• Registered nurse Carol Beasley of Southold will receive the Laura Goodale Award for 2011, honoring the nurse who most exemplifies the qualities of Ms. Goodale, who was known at the North Fork’s “Florence Nightingale” during her 42-year career at Eastern Long Island Hospital. The award was established over 25 years ago by the Southold-Greenport Rotary and lifelong ELIH supporter Carl Vail Sr. It  annually goes to a nurse who personifies the spirit of Ms. Goodale, known for her caring nature. Ms. Beasley began her career at ELIH in 1968 and worked the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift in the intensive care unit for most of her career. She is a proponent of holistic nursing, focusing on the unity, wellness and interrelationship of human beings and their environment, according to vice president of patient care services D. Patricia Pispisa. Ms. Beasley incorporates conventional medicine while treating her patients’ physiological, psychological and spiritual needs, Ms. Pispisa said. The award will be presented to Ms. Beasley at a dinner at the Soundview Restaurant in Greenport on Tuesday, May 10. Tickets are $30. Call 477-5164.

• Eastern Long Island Hospital’s Golf Classic honoree for 2011 is entrepreneur and former banker Ray Terry. The event will be held at  Gardiner’s Bay Country Club on Wednesday, June 8. Mr. Terry, a Stirling Baby, born at ELIH, traces his family roots on the North Fork back to Southold Town’s first settlers in 1640. He began his career as a teller at Southold Savings Bank and rose to become its president in 1980. During his tenure, the bank’s assets grew from $300 million to more than $800 million and he was instrumental in its 1987 merger with North Fork Bank and was chairman of the board until his retirement in 2002. In 1989, Mr. Terry was The Suffolk Times’ Business Person of the Year. He has been active in the community, serving as Southold Fire Department chief and fire commissioner; president of Southold Rotary; trustee at St. Patrick Church; a board member of North Fork Country Club; treasurer of the Long Island Chapter of the New York State Archeological Association; and a North Fork Little League manager. He is finance officer of the American Legion Griswold-Terry-Glover Post 803.

• Eastern Long Island Hospital will hold its spring blood drive in the conference room on Thursday, May 5, 8 a.m.-5:15 p.m. Call 477-5100.

• The Southold Human Resources Department and ELIH will co-sponsor Live Your Life Well: Tools for Recognizing and Treating Depression, a discussion with Colleen Merlo, executive director of Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, on Friday, May 6, 11 a.m. to noon, at the town Human Resources Center in Mattituck. • East End Brain Group will host a meeting and social on Tuesday, May 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Piping Plover Cafe in Southold’s Feather Hill shopping center. Refreshments will be provided.

• Temple Yoga in Greenport will offer Buddhist meditation classes on Mondays, May 2 through June 6, 7:30-9 p.m., with Buddhist nun Gen Kelsang Norden. The program fee is $60, or $15 per class.

• Dr. Barbara Prestano of Peconic ENT will conduct free hearing tests at Mattituck-Laurel Library on Friday, May 6, 1-3 p.m. The library will host instructor Beth Winter’s Yoga and You program, for children in grades two and three, on Fridays, April 29 and May 6, 5:45-6:30 p.m. Bring a mat or beach towel. • The Dental School at Stony Brook University is recruiting participants for a research study of Type 2 diabetics. If you are 35 or older, being treated for Type 2 diabetes, have at least 16 natural teeth and your gums are sore or bleed when you brush them, you are eligible to participate. The purpose of the six-month study is to determine whether standard periodontal therapy is effective in reducing A1C levels in Type 2 diabetics. Study participants will receive free dental exams and teeth cleaning as well as modest compensation for time and travel. Call 632-3964.
