S. Joseph Conrardy

S. Joseph Conrardy of Southold died April 4 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He was 88.

He was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Manhattan to Emily and Joseph Conrardy. He graduated in 1940 from Babylon High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Force with the 23rd Depot Repair Squadron from 1943 to 1945. On Sept. 10, 1949, he married Eleanor Bertos at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church of Babylon.

From 1948 to 1986 he was on the road constantly as a civil engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation based in Hauppauge. He was a member of Griswold-Terry-Glover American Legion Post 0803 in Southold.

Family members said he enjoyed model trains, railroads and woodworking, and was an avid reader of World War II history.

Mr. Conrardy is survived by his wife; his son, Richard, and daughter, Gayle Savage, both of Southold; his sister, Rosemary Bertos of Florida; and four grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, April 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A service will take place Thursday, April 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery.
