Southold nurse wins 2011 Laura Goodale Award

Registered nurse Carol Beasley of Southold will receive the Laura Goodale Award for 2011, honoring the nurse who most exemplifies the qualities of Ms. Goodale, who was known at the North Fork’s “Florence Nightingale” during her 42-year career at Eastern Long Island Hospital.

The award was established by the Southold-Greenport Rotary and lifelong ELIH supporter Carl Vail Sr. more than 25 years ago.

It  annually goes to a nurse who personifies the spirit of Ms. Goodale, known for her caring nature.

Ms. Beasley began her career at ELIH in 1968 and worked the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift in the intensive care unit for most of her career. She is a proponent of holistic nursing, focusing on the unity, wellness and interrelationship of human beings and their environment, according to vice president of patient care services D. Patricia Pispisa. Ms. Beasley incorporates conventional medicine while treating her patients’ physiological, psychological and spiritual needs, Ms. Pispisa said.  The award will be made at a dinner in Ms. Beasley’s honor at Soundview Restaurant in Greenport on Tuesday, May 10.
