Southold superintendent receives three-year extension

Superintendent David Gamberg has received a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the helm of Southold’s schools through June 2015.

The school board voted on March 23 to extend the agreement, which was due to expire in June 2012.

Mr. Gamberg currently earns $175,000 per year and, at his request, will not receive a raise next year. He was hired to replace Dr. Christopher Gallagher, who retired in June 2008.

“They clearly like what’s happening and I like being a part of what’s happening,” Mr. Gamberg said Tuesday morning.

School board president Paulette Ofrias credited Mr. Gamberg with initiating several positive changes and seeing them through to completion. He’s also credited with fostering cooperation among the board, faculty members and the community on enhancing local education.

Mr. Gamberg has often said students need to be better prepared to compete in a global marketplace, and that schools need to move beyond training students on absorbing information by encouraging them to become lifetime learners.

He has actively participated in the North Fork United Schools effort to consolidate some services among local districts and organized a letter-writing campaign last year to prevail on legislators in Albany to work to change the formula that allocates state tax money to local districts.
