BID declines to vet vendors for farmers’ market
Although some merchants have expressed concern about a Saturday morning farmers’ market operating in the northwest parking lot on Adams Street, the Greenport Village Board gave it a go-ahead March 25, but said the village Business Improvement District would vet vendors.
Thanks, but no thanks, was the BID’s general response.
Group members told organizer Lara McNeil they’ll watch this summer and allow the market organizers to follow their own criteria to who will or won’t be allowed a table. Ms. McNeil said she is seeking vendors who are local growers or whose products are home-grown.
“What motivates you?” Janice Claudio of Claudio’s Restaurant asked Ms. McNeil.
It started as a project for her college studies in nutrition, Ms. McNeil said. But as she got into it, she described it as “exciting” to see its development.
“I try to keep it as local as possible,” Ms. McNeil said.
The market begins May 28 and is to run from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays through mid-October.
