Mattituck-Laurel: An art exhibition and a ‘Sprint into Summer’ 5K Run

Parents, students and teachers all know that May and June explode with tests, award ceremonies, culmination of projects and just the feeling of running on a treadmill. Take time to celebrate our students’ many accomplishments!

One of the major highlights this time of year is a chance to view the work of our talented art students. The hallways will be covered with incredible creations by students in grades 7-12 during the annual art exhibition, which runs from May 17-25. The work of those who participated in the New York State Art Teachers Association Portfolio Assessment will also be on display.

Thirty-three MHS students participated in the NYSATA assessment and all of them scored in the 95th percentile, distinguishing their work as quality above grade level. They included eighth-grader Abby Terry; ninth-graders Elly Bergen, Helen Chen, Luke Benante, Dan Peters, Paige Catalano, Emily Ciamaricone, Megan Daly and Nina Nickerson; sophomores Doug Beebe, Natasha VandeWetering, Andre Vega, Yulia Palianok, Amy Zurek, Max Burlingame, Cordelia Larsen, Morgan Murphy, Shannon Sheridan, Chiaro and Alexandria Chowbay; juniors Mallaigh Nolan, Lauryn Serrano and Kaitlyn Hughes; and seniors Patricija Markovaite, Rebecca Grohoski and Hanna Baglivi. Special congratulations to those who earned a perfect score: Kaitlin Beebe, Caitlin Penny, Morgan Gildersleeve, Veronica Reitz, Kira Buckel, Colin Keil, Ashley Goeller and Katherine Golde.

While preparing for the exhibit, students have also been busy making origami cranes to help the children of earthquake-ravaged Japan. Mattituck High School students created over 300 cranes, and OshKosh B’Gosh will send an outfit to Japan for each one. Special thanks to master crane makers Qiong You, Helen Chen, Lina Chen and Kaitlyn Hughes.
