Photos: Seal enjoys the sun in Peconic Bay

These photos of a harbor seal sunning himself on a rock between Robins Island and the beach in New Suffolk  were taken yesterday by Regina Calcaterra, she of the unsuccessful attempt to get the Democratic nomination to run against Ken LaValle last year.

Harbor seals are the most common type of seals seen locally.

In fact, according to one story, Robins Island didn’t get its name from the red-breasted bird, but from “rob,” the Dutch word for seals, which once were plentiful on its beaches.
