An unlucky Garden City man was charged with drug possession Friday night, and his injured passenger was taken to the hospital, after a car he was driving was hit by another motorist, according to police.
Michael John Moonan Jr., 18, was westbound on Route 25 in Cutchogue when his vehicle was struck by another driven by Orcun Unsal, 24, of Jamesport just before 10:30 p.m., pushing Mr. Moonan’s vehicle into a telephone pole, according to police reports. Police said Mr. Unsal was attempting to turn left into the 7-Eleven parking lot.
A passenger in Mr. Moonan’s vehicle, 19-year-old Kaitlyn Bressette, was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center.
Police said officers smelled marijuana coming from Mr. Moonan’s vehicle when they arrived. According to reports, a bag of marijuana was found in the car, after which Mr. Moonan reportedly admitted having another bag of marijuana in his pants pocket. Police reported also finding 31 rectangular prescription pills in Mr. Moonan’s possession, for which he did not have a prescription.
Mr. Moonan was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and taken to police headquarters, where he was processed and released on $300 cash bail.
• An anonymous call from a resident of Washington Street in Greenport led police to a man who was apparently drinking in his car Saturday evening, according to reports. Just before 10 p.m., police said they detected the scent of alcohol coming from the parked vehicle and found 59-year-old Anthony Williams inside with a bottle of blackberry brandy on the front seat and several empty beer cans in the car. Police said Mr. Williams failed several field sobriety tests. He was charged with DWI and taken to police headquarters for a morning arraignment.
• Alvin Combs, 49, of Mattituck had a seizure and became unconscious before hitting a guardrail while driving on Route 25 in Laurel on May 3, said police. Mr. Combs and Gail Combs, 48, of East Marion, were both taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by the Mattituck Fire Department Rescue Squad.
• Two Shelter Island residents were taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon after a one-car accident at the corner of Love Lane and Route 25 in Mattituck. Judith Card, 50, told police she was attempting to avoid hitting an eastbound vehicle when she struck a tree while attempting to make a left turn from Route 25. She and her 16-year-old passenger were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Mattituck Fire Department.
• Benito Choquin Montenero, 66, of Greenport was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by the Cutchogue Fire Department Rescue Squad on May 1 after he steered right to avoid hitting a car that failed to signal when making a left turn on Route 25 in Cutchogue, according to police reports. Police said Mr. Montenero’s car hit a guy wire and several trees before coming to a stop just east of the intersection with Highland Road.
Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
