Southold-Peconic: SHS band concert and summer soccer registration

Lori Salmon will be among those walking for a cure for cystic fibrosis in the Great Strides Walk this Saturday, May 21, in Westhampton Beach. Lori is a member of Team Cure for Cammy, named for her niece Camryn Koke, who has CF. If you would like to donate, you may do so online at cf.org/Great Strides.

St. Patrick Church will hold its annual yard sale Saturday, May 28, from 8 a.m. to noon. Anyone interested in renting a table for $25 can call 765-3442. Funds from table rentals will benefit the church youth group.

A spring concert by Southold High School band, chorus and orchestra students will be presented Tuesday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the district auditorium. Come and enjoy the musical talents of our students.

The deadline to register for summer soccer, which is open to grades K through 6, is June 10. Forms can be found at southoldsoccer.com and should be mailed to Southold Soccer, P.O. Happy anniversary to Dan and Donna Dunne, who toast 23 years of marriage on May 17.

Congratulations to our NJROTC cadets on being part of the best unit in the nation. We’ve known it all along! Special thanks to instructors Major William Grigonis, Senior Chief Charles Turner and Petty Officer First Class Felicity Turner for their dedication to the program.

Junior high students of the month were Eric Alpi, social studies; Raeann Berry, foreign language; Zach Ellis, physical education; Jessica Jerome, family and consumer science; Julia Schade, art and Monique Smith, science.

SHS Interact Club members have been busy lately. Last Saturday, they participated in the Great Strides Walk for cystic fibrosis at Blydenburgh Park in Smithtown and, on May 25, they’ll sponsor a blood drive in the high school gym. Students may donate during the school day; community members are encouraged to donate between 2:30 and 4 p.m.

You can also donate blood on May 25, 2:15 to 8 p.m., at the Southold Fire Department for the Southold Town blood program. A complimentary spaghetti dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m.

Good luck to SFD chief Peggy Killian on her new business, the Southold Emporium. Many of her fellow firefighters and EMTs were on hand to support her at last Saturday’s grand opening.

Let’s join Shelter Island residents in welcoming Lieutenant Joseph Theinert’s Banshee Troop, 1st Squadron, to our area. They arrive Thursday, May 19, to honor, remember and pay their respects to Lt. Theinert, who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan last June. May our beautiful area and the people who live here offer them peace.
