Art Beat: New exhibits opening this weekend
• The Hidden City Orchestra will perform a re-enactment of an early music concert that was presented in 1880 at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at the Jamesport Meeting House. The music will be loosely based on a concert given at the meeting house that featured music of 1680 and 1780.
The Hidden City Orchestra, organized by New Suffolk composer George Cork Maul, is a “performance art group surrounded by an improvising orchestra” made up of professional musicians from the New York area as well as a revolving ensemble of fine and performing artists, according to a press release.
The May 28 performance will end with a “Paint and Play” collaboration between a painter and the musicians, with the painter creating art from what he hears and the musicians playing what they see.
General admission is $15; students, $10. Tickets are available at Duffy’s Deli in Jamesport, Blue Door Gallery in Riverhead and Cecily’s Love Lane Gallery in Mattituck.
• Work by Adelaide O’Connell and Eleanor Moser is on display this month at Old Town Art and Crafts Guild in Cutchogue. Both are longtime members of the guild; their work features scenes of the North Fork and Long Island.
• The new exhibit opening May 21 at Art Sites gallery in Riverhead features work by Bastienne Schmidt and Craig Kane.
“Topos” (Greek for “place”) by Ms. Schmidt includes paintings inspired by aerial views of human infrastucture and the Earth’s surface. Her process involves building layers using newspaper, fabric, tracing paper, ink pens, dental floss, string and drip paint. The German-born Ms. Schmidt, who is also a fine-art photographer, is based in New York, but has lived in Greece and Italy. Her work is in numerous major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography.
In “Constructs,” Craig Kane creates miniature site installations from his “portable studio” of a couple of suitcases.
The show opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 21, and continues through June 26.
• Cloud 9 North Fork Artists will hold a show at Clovis Point winery in Jamesport beginning Saturday, May 21. The local artists have been meeting monthly for several years, and often paint together en plein air or in each other’s studios. Members include Fran Reichert, Laurie Ortmann, Joan Curran, Annie Dilworth, Dolores Castrucci, B.L. Moyle and Ann McCaughey. The show, which features guest exhibitor Jada Rowland, continues through July.
