Mattituck-Laurel: Park District to host dedication of refurbished district building and opening of new community room May 28

Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the lives of the heroes who have fought and lost their lives for our freedom. You are always in our hearts!

While honoring our heroes, it’s a good time to acknowledge and congratulate some of the future heroes in our midst who are members of the Mattituck/Southold/Greenport NJROTC, the No. 1 unit in the nation! To all the young men and women in this program, we salute you!

The Mattituck Park District will host a dedication of the newly refurbished district building and the opening of the new community room at 10 a.m., Saturday May 28, at Veterans Park. The building will be dedicated to the memories of local heroes Pvt. Russell M. Penny and Sgt. Peter P. Krupski, who gave their lives in service to our country during World War II. The NJROTC will perform, along with two Mattituck bagpipers and the 319th Army Band. Guests and dignitaries are invited for refreshments afterward.

The library book discussion on June 21 at 4 p.m. will be “China Lake” by Meg Gardiner. Copies are now available and can be picked up at the library.

All are welcome to join the weekly knitting and crochet group at Mattituck-Laurel Library Monday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.

A very special belated birthday wish to Dot Nine from her granddaughters Teagan and Cassie.

Celebrating their special days this week are Lucas Sisson on May 27; Eric Koch and Aidan Carter on the 28th; Wendy Zuhoski on the 29th; and Anne Bruno and Tatiana Giordano on the 30th.

Donna and Jim Kowalsick are always very proud of their daughters but this month, youngest daughter Samantha is in the spotlight. She recently won the MSG Varsity Award for her film, “The Story of My School,” featuring Tractor Day, a long-standing Mattituck High School tradition in which students drive to school on a piece of our local farm heritage. The school won a $5,000 award thanks to Samantha’s talent and effort. Congratulations!

For a really glorious sight, drive or stop by the high school this evening, May 26, around 6 p.m. to see our students dressed in their finest for this year’s prom. Coach buses will transport our young ladies and gentlemen to Majestic Gardens, where they will dance the night away. A special thank-you to the PTSA for hosting a pre-prom gathering.

Congratulations to Casey Ciamaricone, Timothy MacNish and Sierra Savercool for winning first place in the Suffolk County division of Newsday’s stock market game.

The Mattituck-Cutchogue Athletic Booster Club annual Sprint Into Summer 5K Run is slated for Sunday, June 12, at 9 a.m. Check the school website for registration information.

There’s an early deadline for next week’s column due to Memorial Day weekend. Please contact me by 9 a.m. tomorrow morning if you have something to include in the June 2 issue.
