William John Eckartz

William John Eckartz of Peconic died May 20 at the age of 81.

He was born March 22, 1930, in the Bronx and was a high school graduate. He married Evelyn Forand on March 24, 1951, in the Bronx. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Army for two years, attaining the rank of corporal.

Mr. Eckartz was a machinist in Southold. According to his family, he enjoyed working with his hands and was always eager to help them fix something that needed repair.

He is survived by his wife; his children, David, of Queens; Stephen, of Douglaston, Queens; Cathy Checklick of Cutchogue; Margaret Finne of Ridge; and Debbie Dustin of Medford; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Cremation was private.
