Art Beat: Openings this weekend


• “Hues of Humanity,” photographs by Rowena Marvin, will be on view May 7 to June 12 at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport. The display of photographs, taken during Ms. Marvin’s travels in Central America, will open with a reception Saturday, May 7, 3 to 5 p.m.

• East End Arts Council and Peconic Landing have extended the submission deadline for the second annual juried Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition planned for June 11 to Oct. 1 at Brecknock Hall in Greenport. Completed applications must be postmarked by May 10, with installation beginning June 1. Each artist may submit up to three original pieces; selected artists will each receive a $100 stipend.
Jurors include Richard Mizdal, Dr. Charles Riley II and Marianne Weil; Matko Tomicic of the Longhouse Reserve sits on the honorary committee.

• Joyce Beckenstein of Mattituck will present ‘What the Critic Said,’ a First Friday talk, at 7 p.m. May 6 at the East End Arts Council gallery in Riverhead.
The talk will include discussion of criticism written in New York Times arts columns and art journals about featured works, shown as slides. The talk will be followed by a tour — from the critic’s perspective — of the “East End Light” exhibit in the EEAC gallery.  Ms. Beckenstein is an art historian, arts writer and director of the North Fork Arts Project.

• The work of East End Arts Council members Scott McIntire and Dianne Martin will be on display from May 6 to Aug. 6 at the Rosalie Dimon Gallery at Jamesport Manor Inn. Mr. McIntire’s work includes paintings and silk screens on wood of “familiar icons encountered in his East End travels,” according to a press release, while Ms. Martin’s work “often begins with a monotype using bits of nature as part of the printing process,” with other materials added as a piece develops.
A reception is planned for Sunday, May 22, 3 to 5 p.m.

• Long Island landscape photographs by Bill Miller are on view through May 31 at Jason’s Vineyard in Jamesport. Artist’s receptions will be held Saturdays, May 7 and 21, from 1 to 5 p.m.
