It’s official: Garbage haulers now need permits
The Southold Town Board voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt a new law mandating carter permits for companies that pick up garbage here.
The permits will cost $5 and will be available at the Town Clerk’s office, but not until after the Town Board enacts a separate resolution setting the permit fee.
The new law was drafted after complaints from the industry that a new garbage hauler, Go-Green Sanitation, was not requiring residents to separate recyclables from garbage placed at the curb. Town and state law requires all garbage left out for pickup to be separated, with recyclable materials placed in a separate container.
In ending a protracted dispute with the town, Go-Green agreed last month to pick up recyclables that have been separated from other garbage. Town officials say the new permit, which is similar to what’s required in other Suffolk communities, will strengthen the ability to enforce various trash-related ordinances.
