Jamesport man arrested for DWI after Cutchogue cemetery crash

A Jamesport man was arrested on a drunk driving charge Friday night, after he lost control of his vehicle, swerved through traffic and over several lawns before crashing into a cemetery wall, all in front of a Southold Town Police cruiser.

Police said Hilario Ramirez-Perez, 27, was driving a 1998 Mitsubishi 2-door sedan south on Depot Lane when he lost control about 6 p.m.  He then careened in and out of traffic, drove over several lawns and narrowly missed a head-on collision with a patrol car, according to authorities.

He then came to a stop after crashing into a wall at Sacred Heart Cemetery, located off Depot Lane. Volunteers with the Cutchogue Fire Department responded and transported Mr. Ramirez-Perez, who police said was drunk, to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Mr. Ramirez-Perez was charged with DWI. He was taken to police headquarters and held overnight for an appearance in Southold Town Justice Court.
