Mattituck-Laurel: Reunion plans and a food drive

The most important message I can send this week is: Remember your mother on Mother’s Day! Sunday is Mother’s Day and a chance to show our mothers how much they mean to us.

Since 1945, Mattituck High School has invited the graduates of 25 years before as guests for commencement exercises. This year, members of the Class of 1986 are cordially invited to attend the MHS graduation on Saturday, June 25, at 10 a.m. It is always a nice way to congratulate the graduates while taking a stroll down Memory Lane.

Speaking of memories, anyone interested in information about a reunion for the MHS Class of 1976 can contact Missy (Mary) McCabe at 477-5988 or [email protected] Members of the McGann-Mercy Class of 1976 are also invited to participate.

A 40th reunion is also planned for the MHS Class of 1971 on July 16. If you haven’t received a letter and want information, contact Nancy at 298-8638 for details.

The Mattituck-Cutchogue PTSA will host Meet the Candidates Night on Wednesday, May 11, 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The candidates running for three Board of Education seats are Charlie Anderson, Jerry Diffley, Laura Jens-Smith and Joan Ferris. Bring questions. The balloting is May 17. Every vote counts!

The Mattituck Fire Department has been busy! From Jan. 1 to March 31, our volunteers responded to the following calls: 105 medical emergencies, six fires, eight carbon monoxide detector investigations, nine motor vehicle accidents, 11 automatic alarms, one false alarm, one car fire, four other hazards and two standbys.

The fire department juniors held their annual elections. The new officers are Kelly Cassidy, captain; Cole Karlin, lieutenant; Rachel Wells, secretary; and Sarah Doherty, treasurer.

The East End Lions will hold a food drive at King Kullen and Waldbaum’s on Saturday, May 7. All food collected will benefit our local food pantry. To become a member of the Lions, contact Diane at 478-7010 or [email protected]

Celebrating May birthdays this week are: Devyn Ulmet on the 5th; Michael Kar, Madeline Burlingame, Jessica Boomer and Dorothy Sullivan on the 7th; Eamon Deegan, Sherri Kelly and Hannah Baglivi on the 8th; Lainie Dubinsky on the 9th; Danny Motto and John Boucher on the 10th; and Sierra Roces, Mike Shanahan, Colleen Shanahan, Chris Rehm and Dennis Case on the 11th.

Some MHS graduates are now doing some very interesting work. I recently received an email from Will Golde, Class of 2005, who has been working on a documentary about a river raft guide called “The Desert River Bends.” The final project is going to be submitted to the Student Academy Awards, The Boulder Adventure Film Festival and the Banff International Film Festival. If you’d like more information about Will’s project, can help him by making a donation toward its completion or just want to say “hi,” you can email him at [email protected] or at

The Mattituck varsity baseball/cheerleading spaghetti dinner was a great success. While all of the volunteers deserve thanks, Darla and Joe Doorhy deserve a special thanks for their hard work, imagination and enthusiasm.
