Sports Blog: Local man wins Sports Emmy

Lee Fitting, a Greenport High School graduate and senior producer for ESPN, was among those honored in the 32nd annual National Sports Emmy Awards at Lincoln Center recently. One of the programs he works on, “E:60”, snared an Emmy. Fitting was also nominated for an Emmy in both the outstanding long feature for “Josiah’s Time” and outstanding short feature for “A League of Her Own: Chelsea Baker.”

“Josiah’s Time” is a story Fitting learned about from his mother, Cheryl, who received an e-mail about a 6-year-old boy with progeria, a rare rapid-aging disease. Josiah got to live out his dream of playing baseball.

The “E:60” entry in the outstanding short feature category featured a 13-year-old girl named Chelsea Baker, an accomplished knuckleball pitcher. Actress Gina Davis, the star of the film, “A League of Their Own,” narrated.

In a posting on ESPN’s web site, Fitting said that as he was driving home from the awards ceremony he received a text message from his mother that read, “People’s lives changed for the better because their stories were told.”
