Looking to fill up your gas tank before a long drive out of town this holiday weekend?

You might want to stop at the Valero gas station on Main Road in Jamesport, which at $3.93 a gallon for regular gas, had the cheapest price in town Thursday, according to www.Longislandgasprices.com.

The Empire gas station on Main Road in Mattituck also advertised $3.93 a gallon for regular.

At $3.97 a gallon, the Hess gas station on Main Road in Mattituck had the second lowest price for regular gas in Southold Town Thursday, according to the database.

Those prices are lower than the Long Island average of $4.085 for regular gas, though that still 15 cents more than the national average of $3.808. Just be sure to hit the ATM or get cash back from the supermarket before filling up; the stations charge extra for credit.

One man from Mastic said he had waited until running an errand on the North Fork to fill up his tank in Jamesport. He said the price was four cents lower than in his hometown.

“I just saved 40 cents,” he said as a gas attendant pumped 10 gallons into his van. “”It adds up at the end of the year.”

The U.S.  average is down nine cents from this time last week, but up from last year’s price of $2.771 for regular gas, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge report.

“Traditionally prices tend to drop right before Memorial Day,” said Fred Rozell, director of retail pricing for Oil Price Information Service. “In the next 30 days you can expect to see price go down slightly because the whole sale prices are decreasing.”

The lowest fuel price in all of Long Island was at Gas Sale in Central Islip at $3.88 for regular gas.
