Margaret Patricia Delaney

Margaret Patricia Delaney, a resident of Southold for the past 25 years, died Friday, June 3, 2011, at 9:15 p.m. at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Conn. She was 82.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, June 9, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, 55700 Main Road, Southold, N.Y. 11971. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, N.Y.

Mrs. Delaney was born in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1928 to James and Elizabeth (née Quinn) Major. She attended Notre Dame Convent School and Hunter College in New York City. She married Walter A. Delaney in 1951.

Mr. and Mrs. Delaney lived in North Babylon, N.Y., for 31 years. During this time, she worked for the Deer Park Elementary School as a Teacher’s Aide. Since 1986, she and her husband have been residents of Southold, N.Y., where she became a dedicated volunteer at Cutchogue New Suffolk Free Library. Upon retirement, Mrs. Delaney enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, exploring her family roots and going to the beach.

She will always be remembered for her deep devotion to family and as a loving wife to Walter, with whom she recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Her greatest sources of pride and delight were her 16 grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Walter A. Delaney of Southold, N.Y.; her sons Richard, of New York City, N.Y., Kevin of Darien, Conn., Brian, of Weston, Conn., Walter, of Garden City, N.Y., and Christopher, of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; her daughter, Patricia Brown of Fairfield, Conn.; and her grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Delaney’s name may be made to the Notre Dame School, 327 W. 13th St., New York, NY 10014 (212-620-0432).

Visiting hours are scheduled for Wednesday,  June 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home, 52125 Main Road, Southold, NY 11971 (631-765-3850).
